The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional resource for all walkers, hikers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

B&M Home Store with Garden Centre

Pool Industrial Estate, Station Road, Redruth, Pool, Cornwall TR15 3QJ, UK – 0330 838 9544

Great love shopping here. Never come with a time frame. Always spend more than planned.

Good brands at a fraction of the price elsewhere. Lots of choice.

The shoe box

52 Trelowarren St, Camborne TR14 8AH, UK – 01209 713952

Bought some nice shoes at a good price.

Absolutely lovely shop the lady who owns it is excellent and really really helpful. Will absolutely recommend.

Halfords

1, 83-87 Trevenson Rd, Pool, Redruth TR15 3PS, UK – 01209 720010

About the biggest Halfords I've been to. Plenty of free level parking outside. The store is fully accessible, and the huge cycling department upstairs is accessible by lift or stairs. Superstores are great aren't they? There's a huge range of products and extensive choices available, as long as you don't mind spending ages hunting around the place to find what you want. Places this big should have a help desk at the entrance and free maps to locate items. The lady who was at the checkout was pleasant enough, but overall not the best shopping experience.

As with most halfords stores I've been too, they tend to operate with barely enough staff to offer any kind of attentive customer service. If you're looking at stereos or sat navs then there's usually a young know it all assistant that's more than happy to swoop in and offer advice but stand near the car seats (for say 20 mins trying to choose) and you get looked at by the same staff member as he walks off and talks to a customer 3 Isles over looking for car seat covers. If you know what you want and are prepared to just go and find it then this store has a lot to offer. If you want advice then just pray it's area of interest for the shop assistant to show off his man prowess and technical knowledge. This store does excel with its bulb fitting service. There's always someone that magically appears to offer to do this for you and charge £5 or so for 2 mins work.

Another good walking guide. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks. You get one walk free.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Camping and Caravaning

Magor Farm Campsite

Magor Farm, Magor Hill, Camborne TR14 0JF, UK – 01209 713367

Great (but basic) massive family friendly campsite. Watch the kids go feral! For the adults you can have a fire and a chat without getting in trouble with the usual officious owners. Laid back heaven but If you want more than a field, loo and shower go to Newquay.

I love this campsite. So peaceful. It’s simple but with perfectly good showers etc. Lovely owners. Fantastic walks locally and everything else a short drive away. Will hope to return.

Lavender Fields Touring Park

Lavender Fields, Penhale Rd, Carnhell Green, Carnhell Green, TR14 0LU, UK – 01209 831122

The site is in a very quiet location, with beautiful views of the Cornish country side. Pitches are a good size with electric hook up and running water. Toilet block and wash up are both very clean and well appointed. We were warmly welcomed by the owners, who have been very helpful. Our two children very much enjoyed the space on the site to ride bikes and play with other children. Would highly recommend. Thank you.

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
